For the first time in a long time, the Michele super fan left the embroidery behind.

Jared Leto has been famous, stylish and great looking for a long damn time now. Like Madonna, Lady Gaga, and GQ favorite Jeff Goldblum, he is the master of reinvention, knowing when to lean into a persona, and when to move on and not look back. While Leto, now 46 (yes, 46!) has tried on a lot of hats (and hairstyles) over the years, he was so singularly committed to his last persona—Alessandro Michele’s baroque streetwear king—it almost fooled us into thinking it was a permanent one. But Jared Leto may be moving on.

The actor and musician wore a suit designed by Shayne Oliver for Helmut Lang to an event honoring Fleetwood Mac on Friday, breaking his roughly two-year Gucci red-carpet streak in the process. All white, chest baring, and finished with pointy high-heeled boots, the outfit was what you would call a look. Not to be dramatic, but this is the fashion equivalent of showing up to a party with someone definitely, clearly not your girlfriend on your arm. We’re not saying Leto and Gucci won’t still hook up, but the relationship as we knew it is most likely over.

Like all good reinventions, Leto’s is tied to a larger artistic project. Namely, his fifth studio album with Thirty Seconds to Mars; their first since 2013. The band dropped their first single of the new album on Thursday, with a performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Leto wore another, slightly more low-key Helmut Lang look on stage. It was void of the colors, crystals, and cobras we’ve come to expect Leto in while he performs. His hair for both events was also more groomed than we’ve seen it in some time; like those glorious ombré days, only with a dash of ’70s Bob Seger.
