Once upon a time, the crew’s outlandish, overdone threads were the pinnacle of bad style. That’s not the case anymore.
In their heyday, the cast of MTV’s Jersey Shore were as famous for their maximalist, special “boardwalk-inspired” Seaside Heights–bound style as they were for their wild behavior in the club/bar/car/street/MTV-provided house. Ed Hardy prints, muscle tanks, giant basketball shorts, and an assortment of the most abused denim known to mankind were go-tos for the guys, accessorized with terra-cotta-hued spray tans (the “T” in GTL, baby) and fistfuls of cement-hold hair gel every morning. The Situation, Ronnie, Pauly D, and Vinny weren’t on the made-in-America, heritage tip, nor were they trying desperately to look like Don Draper in Mad Men. They were doing their own thing entirely—and unapologetically—which is precisely what made their style so entertaining.
Now, five years after the show went off the air, the cast is reuniting for a new season, dubbed Jersey Shore Family Vacation. In anticipation of the April 5 premiere, the stars have been doing rounds of press to promote the show. They’re still rocking spray tans and helmet hair, but that’s about the only thing that’s remained the same. Now they essentially look like Scott Disick, which is to say they look like a lot of guys in America right now. They wear bomber jackets, skinny black jeans, and Yeezy Boosts. The jeans are stacked, the T-shirts are blank. Ronnie and Vinny even have scruff, a move that’s antithetical to the laundered, waxed, and perfumed Jersey Shore male aesthetic. They look good, but damn, we kind of miss the old…situation.
Yes, we support a man’s decision to stop wearing tattoo-print clothing. Yes, we’ve championed all of the things these guys are wearing over the past several years. But it’s a shame that in this, the no-rules era of American style, where trippy athleisure gear and sexed-up used-car-salesman clothes are having major moments, our Italian-American brothers have chosen to blend in with the crowd. In 2010, we did a story with the cast of Jersey Shore where we made-under their gym style. In 2018, we might just have to make them up again. Pauly D, meet Alessandro Michele.
